Austin Cheerleading Gym Owners Unite to Stop Bullying

The Austin all-star competitive cheerleading gym owners have come together as one to promote acceptance and end bullying. The group has decided to put rivalries aside in light of the recent death of a male cheerleader, Drake Mallory.   This event has not only directly affected our local all-star cheer community, but has impacted the national all-star cheer community as a whole.

While "Anti-Bullying" campaigns have been at the forefront of national media coverage, this campaign focuses on a greater message of acceptance and compassion in today's youth.  The group believes that punishing a "bully" is less effective than empowering children to BE themselves, love who they are and what they do.  All nine of the leading Austin cheer gym owners believe that best way to combat bullying and its negative effects is to instill self-confidence and self-worth in every child that we train.

The new non-profit organization is currently in development and will support a message of empowerment that can be summed up in four simple characters...OK2B.  It’s OK to be “whomever or whatever you are”.  It is a universal motto that can be picked up by anyone regardless of age, race, religion, gender, size or credo.  It crosses all borders and boundaries.

The catalyst for this historic meeting was the loss of a local cheer athlete who tragically took his own life partially as a result of the teasing, bullying and lack of acceptance endured by many male cheerleaders.  Male cheerleaders are often instantly stigmatized as "weak" or "girly" for participating in an activity that was, ironically, founded by and for men.

The loss of Charles Drake Mallory has made an impact on us all.  He was an outgoing and talented young athlete from Buda, TX in the South Austin area.  By age 12, Drake was an extremely cultured child having participated in a wide range of activities and interests including, an integral part of the Elite Cheer Company Competitive Cheer Team, Boy Scouts, jump rope team, dance, band, and various other science, arts & athletic activities.

The OK2B group will be meeting on Monday June 17, 2013 at the Genuine Joe Coffeehouse at 2001 Anderson Lane in Austin, TX at 10:30 AM to launch the OK2B campaign, discuss the details of our agenda and plans to move forward.  We are inviting local press establishments to attend and help get this message out to the community.

The participating cheerleading gyms in this endeavor are, The Elite Cheer Company, Cheer Station, Austin Cheer Factory, All That Cheer, Primetime Cheer, Texas Power Athletics, Champions Cheer Crush, Courage Cheer, Cheer Athletics Austin.

It's OK2B…
